o.t.s.o…..November

For a long time, I’ve had the feeling that from a runner’s point of view, every individual month of the year has some special characteristic that makes it that little bit different from each of the others. Quite how to put those sometimes subtle differences into words has previously escaped me. But in an attempt to make an even bigger fool of myself, I’ve decided that a short poem for each of the 12 calendar months might give just a flavour of how running changes as the cycle of the year rolls around. Don’t laugh !!! Here’s November:

The November runner

Golden leaves falling, the temperature too

Vanishing daylight, the summer’s behind you.

Maybe the toughest month to get out and train ?

If not raining it’s windy, if not windy it rains !

—————————————————

No time to rest, cross country season’s here

So it’s time to dig out all the old winter gear

On with the waterproofs, thermals and gloves

Ignoring the storm clouds that gather above

—————————————————

Cold sunny Saturday, it’s race day again

Forty five minutes – no pleasure, just pain

Run as hard as you can, score a point for the team

Cross the line knackered, the sweat turns to steam

—————————————————-

A ten minute warm down, a quick cup of tea

and driving back home, what a great sight to see;

The huge orange orb of a setting autumn sun

Never has getting cold and wet been more fun !

  1. Hi Kim. I enjoyed your poem very much and it brought back memories of muddy days training and races . In my police days I ran cross country races in a league for police teams from the forces around London on Wednesdays. Each of teams had to organise a race within their county. Kent one was always in Mote Park, Maidstone. Those were the days. Dennis Morden

    1. Thanks Dennis – hope you are well. Coincidentally, it was memories of driving home after racing at Mote Park in late autumn or early winter that inspired the poem ! All the best, Kim
