Last Thursday’s conditions in Snowdonia (see o.t.s.o…..April) had improved greatly by the time Andy and I arrived on Tuesday lunchtime. Fairly bright and pleasant as we left Pen y pas with a temperature of about 10 degrees and an expected temperature at the top of about zero. The climb up to the ridge of Crib Goch felt even tougher this time than it did last year, but that may be because this time I was able to see more clearly the consequences of a slip or fall ! The wind picked up as it always does as we reached the top of the ridge, but we were able to scramble along it reasonably quickly. Once off the ridge, we then climbed up to the summit of Garnedd Ugain, this time taking the correct, but more scrambly route to the top. Hopefully, this link takes you to a couple of short video clips that give a flavour of the climb. https://youtu.be/D9js4fqJnZs
With the thought of maybe attempting an end to end run of the 3000s later in the year, the main aim of the trip was to identify a good route from the top back down to Nant Peris, as this was a section that we hadn’t been able to work on last year. Going via Crib Goch first, then Garnedd Ugain before going to the top of Snowdon before doubling back makes it necessary to take a route along the Llanberis path for about two miles before dropping down a precipitous slope towards Nant Peris. This proved to be a long and fairly slow option. So rather than answering the questions about the route, this recce has created more !!! Maybe starting at Snowdon, changing the direction and dropping from the eastern end of Crib Goch may be a viable option ?
Although a rethink is needed, it was a good trip and very worthwhile.
