If you happen to be feeling a bit down at the moment, probably best to give this one a miss (but at least it’s short).
It’s a habit of mine at this time of year to look back on the year that’s ending, and maybe look forward to an ambition or two as the New Year arrives ( strictly from a running point of view you understand ! ). Not sure if it’s age related, or if I have simply become a gloomy, miserable old b’stard, but I find that the highlights don’t appear to be very high, and motivation for ambitions seems to be a bit lacking these days. However, with the contents of my glass currently at 50% of capacity, just for the moment I’ll assume it’s half full.
So my main highlight must simply be the fact that after a couple of years being plagued by hip and knee problems, which although not serious they made running more or less impossible, I have had an injury free year, and today (30th December) racked up my 1000th mile for the year. That’s always one of my annual targets, and one which I haven’t achieved since 2020. Racing achievements were few and far between, but I was satisfied with a 1hr 43′ half marathon, a 46’44” 10k and a 38minute 5 miler during the year, and felt lucky to have two quick team – mates to be part of a British veterans over-65 team champions. Thanks John and Sean !!!
Any thoughts on targets and ambitions seem to change according to the mood I’m in, between thoughts of another marathon or ultra on a good day, and maybe it’s time to give it up – on the cloudy days. I hope the new year brings you fresh inspiration and some PBs !!! Happy New Year – Kim
