o.t.s.o…..targets

As the dust settles on the Christmas and New Year celebrations, a reflection on another year done, and some targets to set for 2024.

First things first – I’m really happy to still be in the game !!! By early May of last year I really thought my running days were all behind me. The longstanding hip and knee problems wouldn’t go away, the pain was bad enough to make running impossible, and various examinations weren’t coming up with any answers. But after about 4 months off, I tried a slow jog to the end of my street and back and there was no pain. A very very gradual build up in distance got me 17 miles in total for September, which grew to 56, 77 and 107 miles for Oct, Nov and December respectively. Kicking off the new year yesterday with a 13.1 mile run round the TW 1/2 marathon course makes me cautiously optimistic that I can set some targets for 2024, although beyond a couple of my regular favourite half marathons at Tunbridge Wells https://www.twharriers.org.uk/tunbridge-wells-half-marathon/ on 18th February and Paddock Wood https://www.paddockwoodhalfmarathon.co.uk/ on 3rd March, I’m not going to tempt fate by saying what those targets are (that’s my secret !)

Anyway, this is the time of year for looking forward and setting some short, medium and longer term goals to keep you motivated. It makes getting out on these cold, wet dark winter days and nights a little bit easier if you’re counting down the days to your next race or challenge! And just remember – however reluctant you may feel to venture out when the elements are against you, you’ll always be pleased that you did afterwards ! So take a look at the events calendars online and pick yourself a race or two to aim for. You’ll be glad you did.

Happy 2024 – Kim
