Birthday run

I had long spells of working for two different companies in the small town of Edenbridge in the 1980s, 90s and 00s, and in that time I found lots of good running routes locally. One was an almost entirely cross country route of 12.5 miles which got me all the way home from work. After a day’s work, it was a run that I only did occasionally, but I loved the route. As a birthday celebration I decided to go to Edenbridge this morning and revisit that run back home to Southborough.

It’s more than 15 years since I last ran the route, but I remembered it without too much difficulty and after leaving Edenbridge and crossing several fields I reached a short road section into Hever – passing the Kings Head pub and then through Hever churchyard and the obscured Hever castle.

A good stretch of narrow, shaded path through to Chiddingstone Hoath provided a bit of relief from the glorious but very hot sunshine. Then gently uphill to pass through Watstock farmyard with fabulous views to the north of unspoilt Kentish countryside, before a long gentle shaded run down into Penshurst.

View from Watstock Farm – the distant Oasthouses are Larkins brewery (excellent local beer ! )

Leaving Penshurst and brief stretch of road the last 4 miles of the run are also the hilliest, but today was about enjoyment and taking it easy so it never became too painful. Reaching the beautiful old “Pitcher house” at Poundsbridge marks exactly 3 miles from my house, so after a quick photo stop, I jogged the hilly last section back home to Southborough.

The run was my little birthday present to myself – Cheers !

Post run cuppa – something stronger later !!!
